MATCH REPORT: RAMS RALLY BUT ARE DONE IN AT DINGS

TWELVE minutes of first-half madness ultimately cost an under-par Rams dear as they went down 31-25 at Dings Crusaders.

Having produced a brilliant display at Rosslyn Park seven days earlier, the visitors continued their fine form as Max Hayman rode a powerful maul over for an early try.

But after Zach Clow was perhaps harshly yellow carded for a high tackle inside his own 22, the wheels fell off in spectacular fashion as a rampant Dings ran riot.

Visitors blitzed by brilliant Bristolians

Wing Evan Morris was first to cross after he collected a grubber kick on the left, Raff Weston with a tidy conversion to nudge his side in front.

The hosts extended their lead five minutes later as hooker Sam Cantwell shrugged off a couple of would-be defenders, Weston again on target for 14-5.

And Crusaders again made the most of their numerical advantage as a sweeping move saw Harry Tarling cross in midfield for a third converted try.

Their was no respite for the visitors, and despite being restored to 15 men, Dings sealed their try bonus-point inside 23 minutes as prop Jimmy Halliwell went over on the left.

Rams regrouped and hit back with a second maul try, Ryan Lomas this time the beneficiary, but their hopes took a knock when fly-half Mike Cooke was forced off injured.

Rams rally but ultimately fall short

A reshuffle saw Rowan Grundy switch to stand-off, and Cooke’s replacement Ellis Jones gave his side hope before the break as he barged over out wide.

Optimism was extended as captain Hayman doubled up with a third set-piece score, but Dings replied with one of their own as Cantwell bagged a brace towards the end of the third quarter.

James Baker came on for his 450th first-team appearance as one of two prop swaps, the other Max Marshall almost making an immediate impact only for his pass to Mikey Duda off target with the line at the flanker’s mercy.

But Rams continued to fight and gave themselves a real chance of a comeback success when Harry Bartlett made it two tries in as many games on the right.

The visitors’ miserable afternoon from the tee continued, however, and Dings ruthlessly closed out the final few minutes to give their survival hopes a significant fillip.

Rams, meanwhile, claimed two bonus-points in defeat to remain sixth in the National One table ahead of the Christmas break.

The Berkshire men return to action at home to Sale FC on Saturday, January 10 (3pm).
