RELIVING LAST SEASON: MARCH

WITH the first pre-season game at home to Aberavon less just nine days away on Saturday, August 16, we continue our look back at what was another memorable National One campaign last time out.

March began with a fourth consecutive loss as in-form Plymouth Albion won at Old Bath Road for the first time with a 47-33 victory.

A brace of Tom Putt penalties put the visitors in front before Rams roused themselves via Zach Clow’s try.

However, it was Albion who pulled clear Harry Wilkinson and Jago Sheppard crossing with Putt deadly for 20-5.

The gap was cut to a point before the break as Axel Kalling-Smith and Solodrau Radianirova went over, Fraser Honey with two conversions.

Plymouth flew out of the blocks in the second period though, Jake Bond and Angus Hodges extending the lead with Putt’s boot unstoppable.

Kalling-Smith gave the home side hope with a converted score, but Putt nudged another penalty before adding the extras to a Shea Cornish effort, Plymouth now 44-26 up.

Max Hayman went over late on, Honey converting, but Putt’s fourth penalty of the afternoon was the last scoring play of the day.

Collapse at Sedgley

Rams’ lingering title hopes were effectively put to bed in a heart-breaking 34-33 reverse at Sedgley Park.

It was a result which looked highly unlikely as Honey added to tries from Kalling-Smith, Clow and Dan Swain, the hosts on the board just before the break as Lewis Bradley rode over a maul, Warren Seals reducing the arrears to 21-7.

Kalling-Smith’s second, again added to by Honey, again made it a 21-point game, but Tigers roared back in unbelievable style.

Matt Sturgess firstly finished out wide before Ben Gregory finished a set-piece, Seals’ conversion and penalty reducing the deficit to six points.

From the restart Connor Scanlon crossed before a converted Austin Downham effort had the hosts six in front, and despite Oli Rhoads late try out wide, Rams were beaten by the barest of margins.

Brave loss at Blackheath

The worst run for the Berkshire men in more than a decade continued with a 39-33 setback at Blackheath, but there was plenty to like in defeat at Well Hall.

Despite falling behind to a Tom Baldwin try added to by Jake Hennessey, Rams levelled via young Ollie Hodgson and the boot of Honey.

Converted tires from Club’s Jordan Burns and Nick Barry – with his first for the club – left things equal, but Billy Harding’s maul try made it 19-14 at the break.

Fijian international Tex Cavubati barrelled over before Harding doubled his tally, five further points from the boot of Hennessey leaving the visitors a long way behind.

However, a never-say-die attitude saw Dan Swain finish his own charge-down before Clow went over out wide, the score now 34-26.

Tom Stradwick finished another huge maul to give the hosts’ breathing space, but a late penalty try kept Rams in the game before full-time was called.

Losing streak ends against Titans

The streak was ended with a magnificent 30-19 against-all-odds home success versus then title-chasing Rotherham Titans.

A remarkable start saw Rams 17-0 up inside 25 minutes as Clow, Hayman and Hodgson continued their hot streaks, Honey converting the latter before Titans got over the line via Travis Gordon.

Sam Boxhall crossed with his first touch against his former side with Honey again on target for 24-5, a further penalty added before the was deficit reduced as Lloyd Hayes was on target after Curran Maguire went over.

Honey landed for 30-12, and despite Ronnie du Randt grabbing a converted try with seven minutes remaining, Titans were unable to go any further.
