MATCH REPORT: RAMS FALL TO MAGICAL WIZARDS’ FIGHTBACK

RAMS slipped to a 38-24 home defeat in their opening pre-season game as Aberavon pulled off a sensational comeback at Old Bath Road.

The hosts made a terrific start as they dominated possession and territory, deservedly hitting the front as impressive debutant George Breese rode over a maul for a try superbly converted by fellow first-time starter Mike Cooke.

Rams suffered a setback as Rowan Grundy was taken off with a precautionary niggle, but his replacement George Tomlinson – the Reading University student and former Worcester Warriors Academy man – looked to the manor born, a perfectly timed pass sending Oli Rhoads crashing through before Max Brown was stopped just short of the line.

Yet it was only a temporary reprieve for Aberavon, the home side working the ball smartly down the three-quarters before Zach Clow’s inside pass sent Andrew Lamb over for their second.

Cooke’s conversion attempt drifted just wide of the uprights, but the fly-half helped extend the lead with a lovely long pass which sent Rhoads over.

Clow shows his class

The extras were added for 19-0, and things got even better shortly after as Zach Clow produced a sublime solo score.

Last season’s leading marksman looked lively throughout, and having taken a ball inside his own 22, he sidestepped a couple of defenders before darting down the left, the wing hacking on his own kick before retrieving dotting down.

Aberavon got themselves on the board before the break as scrum-half Elis Horgan sniped over, and the Wizards then took command in a brutal second period.

Their much-changed line-up got on the front foot early on, Ben Gregory finishing out wide before Charlie Thomas reduced the deficit to 24-12.

Wizards march on

The flanker doubled up soon after with another converted effort, and stand-off Thomas then produced a clean pair of heels before adding to his own score after collecting a chip for 26-24.

There was little let-up from the in-form visitors as Gregory was only denied a hat-trick due to a forward pass, only for hooker Luke Davies to peel off a maul and power over on the left.

And Aberavon then made it 38 unanswered points with more forward power on show, second row Shay Smallman blasting over from close range before Thomas again bisected the uprights.

Rams refused to yield and battled to the end, but they were ultimately unable to grab anything more as they gear up for a trip to Taunton Titans next Saturday (3pm).
