MATCH REPORT: POWER-PACKED RAMS STIFLE QUINS

RAMS signed off their pre-season with a fine 57-7 home floodlit win against National Two East neighbours Oxford Harlequins.

With heavy rain during the afternoon parting before kick-off, conditions were good and the hosts came out the traps fast, a strong charge from Morgan MacRae almost creating the opener until a knock-on five metres short.

Rams, however, stayed pinned in their opponents’ 22 and hit the front when Ryan Lomas burrowed from close range, Harris Rutherford with the extras.

Another seven points followed soon after as MacRae showed a fine turn of pace to beat a couple of defenders after returning a goal-line drop-out, his pass sending youngster Theo Pett-Ridge across the whitewash.

Theo bags quick-fire brace

And the former Mini doubled his tally almost immediately, picking off a beautiful interception before Rutherford made it 21-0.

Rams continued to have the better of possession and territory and a huge maul was eventually stopped short of the line before the ball was spun down the three-quarters for Rutherford to touchdown on the left.

The former San Diego man missed from the tee for the first time, but fellow Scot Andrew Lamb then sent a sublime pass over the top for Rutherford to cross in Clubhouse Corner before his conversion attempt hit the right post with the final action of the opening 40 minutes.

The home pack continued to have the upper hand early in the second period, and a powerful five-metre scrum pushed Quins back across their line before Will Moss had the simple task of putting his hand on the ball.

No respite for visitors

Rutherford regained his range for 38-0, and despite Rams losing Sam Bowen to a yellow card for a challenge in the air, an Oli Rhoads charge up the left preceded the impressive replacement centre putting a seventh score of the evening on Lamb’s plate.

Oxford, however, continued to battle hard and deservedly got on the scoreboard at the end of the third quarter, Henry Sayer receiving a fine off-load to dive over for a converted try.

The hosts regrouped though, and more ferocious defence forced a turnover in midfield, Rowan Grundy sending the returning Tomek Pozniak away from 45 metres before Rutherford brought up the half-century.

Marshall gets first try as Sedgley await

And a final gloss was added to the scoreline shortly before the final whistle, Max Marshall powering over from a metre out for a final seven-pointer.

Rams begin their National One campaign at Sedgley Park next Saturday (2.30pm).

The first home game follows seven days later versus Dings Crusaders (3pm). For tickets, lunch – which includes a special offer – and parking, click here
