MATCH REPORT: ARMY RUN RIOT AGAINST DEV XV

CLINICAL British Army ran in 10 tries during a 66-7 rout of Rams Development in Aldershot.

The visitors suffered a pre-match setback as George Tomlinson went down in the warm-up, and things got worse as fly-half Jack Johnson’s delicate chip sent wing Tomasi Vula scooting under the posts.

Johnson added a simple kick, but Rams grew into the contest and put their opponents under steady pressure in their own 22.

However, they knocked on and then conceded a penalty, allowing their rivals to march downfield.

Rams stole a defensive line-out only to cough the ball over again, and scrum-half Todd Johnson soon sniped over from close range.

Red Shirts extend advantage

The extras were again added before the try-scorer doubled up, Rams pushed off their own scrum on the 22 before Matt Dawson proved the provider with an inside ball.

Yet the youthful Rams were showing plenty of heart and spent most of the first half of the second quarter pushing for a score.

Army suffered yellow cards to outside centre Rabade and Dawson, but their 13 men held firm and then kicked an extraordinary 50/22 from 10 metres away from their own try-line.

And the Red Shirts hammered the advantage as Drew Davison touched down wide right, a brilliant touchline conversion making it 26-0.

Captain Judd gets Rams on the board

The score was extremely harsh on the visitors, but they deservedly got off the mark as Harry Judd burrowed over from a close-range maul.

James Gilman slotted a terrific kick with the final play of the opening 40 minutes.

Yet the second period began as badly as the first for Rams, Jack Johnson’s dink partially charged down before ending in the hands of Ben Hurford-John to touch down.

The Red Shirts then scored their sixth from near their own line, Jamie Diamond finishing the job for a seven-pointer and 38-7.

Army flex muscles late on

And the hosts were now beginning to really find their range, the try of the night a length-of-the-field effort seeing Rabade burst clear before replacement Tagitu crossed the whitewash.

The extras were added, but Rams then came close as Aaron Preston was halted just short of the line.

And their woes were increased as Army yet again went from deep inside their own half with another sublime effort, Vula finishing brilliantly from midfield before Jesse Ribeiro converted.

It was now one-way traffic as a tiring Rams side, many of whom had played for Berkshire Under 20s on Sunday, shipped two more tries to Tagitu and Diamond.

And Ribeiro knocked over a brace of kicks before full time was called.

Rams Development will look to return to winning ways at home to Cambridge 1923s on Wednesday, March 11.
