MATCH PREVIEW: NO PRESSURE ON ‘REAL TALENT’ RYAN

SEB Reynolds says there is no pressure on teenage debutant Ryan Carr as he becomes the first junior to graduate to the first team in eight years.

The speedy wing, who scored the match-winning try to beat Windsor and secure the OBB Division One title 12 months ago, is set for a first National One start when Leicester Lions visit tomorrow (3pm).

Kieran Leicester was the last former junior to make the step up to Level Three.

And excited Director of Rugby Reynolds said it was a new experience breaking the news to his young tyro.

He explained: “It’s always interesting calling players to let them know they’ve been selected, but this was the first time I’ve had to wait until he completed his first two lessons to answer!

“There’s no pressure on him. He had a good few years from Under 15 and in the Colts, he’s been picked up by Bath and had a great AASE League with Beechen Cliff.

“He’s stood out for Bath in the U18 Premiership, he’s going on the University scheme and it’s great for him.

“He’s a real talent, excited to get out there and we’re very pleased to get him in.”

Hosts change five for Lions tussle

Carr is one of five changes to the side beaten at Plymouth last time out, with Army skipper Pete Austin and Harry Stone recalled in the pack.

Among the three-quarters, Ollie Hodgson takes over the No. 9 jersey and fit-again Luke Graham returns to the right wing.

This move sees Axel Kalling-Smith switch to outside centre.

Commenting on Austin, who replaces Max Hayman – the skipper out for the season with a broken arm – Seb said: “He’s been first class since he’s been here.

“It’s not been the easiest time for him because he’s behind Max as captain and one of the best hookers in the league.

“But it means Pete’s fresh, gearing up for Inter-Services with the Army, and I’ve no doubt he’ll go well.”

With Hayman out, No. 8 Willo Bicknell takes the Rams’ armband for the first time.

And the DoR believes building a range of leaders is key to the development of his side.

‘Willo an inspiration to others’

He revealed: “Willo’s captained sides he’s been involved with his whole life and he’s a had a very consistent first year.

“He battles through everything – he picks up niggles each week but just keeps coming forward.

“The guys can take a lot of heart and inspiration from that, and I know he really wants the team to put on a performance for the supporters.

“It’s someone different, but he deserves to captain the side.”

Reynolds continued: “I remember when I took over as DoR in 2018/19, Andy (Lynch) said he didn’t think there were many leaders in the side, but come the end of the cycle of that team, almost everyone could captain it.

“They were so experienced, Robbie took it over but you had the likes of Ben Henderson, Jamie Guttridge, Tom Vooght, James McRae came in – and this is where we have to go with this group.”

Turning his attentions to Leicester, who have scored a stack of points in recent weeks, he added: “They’re a dangerous side who always play good rugby, have some subtle passing elements and attacking intent.

“It’s a game we respect, but we want to win to lift everyone’s spirits.”
