MATCH PREVIEW: ‘A KEY FIXTURE ON OUR OWN PATCH’

SEB Reynolds admitted Rams will have to contain a Leeds Tykes side with threats from all angles as they look to build on the brilliant comeback victory at Tonbridge Juddians in tomorrow’s National One clash (3pm).

The Berkshire boys reignited their campaign with a stunning second-half display in a 35-33 success in Kent last time out.

But they now come up against a resurgent visiting outfit who have won five of their past 10 matches.

Those include a magnificent 19-18 Headingley triumph against high-flying Rotherham Titans, as well as superb away wins at TJs and Bishop’s Stortford along with victories versus Dings Crusaders and Clifton.

Despite losing their opening five fixtures having won National Two North last season, Leeds have regained a strong chance of Level Three survival since a 19-7 home loss to Rams.

‘Another real battle to come’

And the Director of Rugby revealed: “They’ve improved a lot and have threats all around the park, with their back three especially looking very dangerous.

“Their games with Sale and Rotherham were excellent, an intense Friday night and the Headingley game which was a great advert for the league.

“We’re looking forward to another real battle.”

DoR pleased with renewed focus

Seb’s youthful outfit – with an average age of 24 – were buoyed by the TJs triumph, and he continued: “The guys have settled very well this week.

“They were rightfully buzzing after the win and rightfully so – it was great to get a victory like that.

“They’ve trained hard in the rain, and they understand what they’re aiming to do as a group.

“The challenge continues to be to build consistency – ironically last week we didn’t despite the result!

“What was good was we built into the contest and with the way the game flowed, eventually took a deserved win.

“We’ve got things we want to introduce tomorrow, but equally our opponents will want to do the same, so it’s set to be a great game.”

Jackson set for maiden start

Rams make four changes to the starting side with Ant Marris and Paddy Jackson coming into the pack for Paddy Harris – ready from the bench – and the injured Connor Stapley.

Harry Stone switches to No. 6 in place of another of last week’s walking wounded, Aaron Tull.

The other personnel swaps see Mike Cooke and Rowan Grundy slot in at fly-half and inside centre, positional changes seeing Ellis Jones moving to 13 with Zach Clow and Axel Kalling-Smith on the wings in place of sidelined duo Oli Rhoads and Luke Graham.

Andrew Lamb switches from fly-half to full-back with Morgan MacRae back on the bench.

Speaking on the starting changes, Seb admitted: “There are two ends of the spectrum with Paddy (Jackson), whose been outstanding in his first season, making his first start and Ant, an experienced head also back.

“Along with Cookey and Rowan, it’s great to have all four in.”

‘Please get behind the team’

Individual recognition also went to Willo Bicknell following the Tonbridge win, with the No. 8 named National One Player of the Week.

And the Head coach praised him while imploring the supporters to bring home back-to-back wins as he ended: “The lads were reminding Willo about it with every carry on Tuesday and he was very coy about it.

“But he thoroughly deserved it because he had a great intensity for the full 80 minutes, looked fresh, carried hard, showed great pace and it was a top display.

“Even when it wasn’t going our way, he brought a voice – and when it did start to go in our favour, he was at the forefront of it.

“Lastly, to out supporters, please make a lot of noise and get behind the team.

“It’s a key fixture on our own patch against a good side, and we want to put on a show for you in what will hopefully be a big crowd again.”
