MATCH PREVIEW: ‘TRUSTING YOUTH IS SOMETHING WE’VE ALWAYS DONE’

SEB Reynolds believes winning the collisions will be crucial if his youngest ever National One squad are to return to winning ways at Leicester Lions.

The Director of Rugby has made five changes for the trip to Westleigh Park, with the returning Ellis Jones the oldest player in the starting line-up at just 28.

Ryan Lomas, Harry Stone, Ollie Hodgson and Axel Kalling-Smith also go from the off as the visitors look to snap a three-match losing run against the improving Midlanders.

And Seb admitted: “Leicester are a good side who’ve been playing some nice stuff, especially in their win against Sale.

“Since we came across them two seasons ago, they’ve always had a huge ability to play top rugby – they’re a good young group and their form has picked up in the past month.

“When we’ve played them they’ve always had great variety, so you’ve always got to be switched on for every threat.

“It took a long time to break them down last season, and we lost the one before that, so we’re under no illusions it’s a tough place to play rugby.

‘Collisions will be key’

“We’ve got to shut them down as best we can and ultimately that tends to come down to who wins the collisions – if you do that you can get on the front foot whether it be in defence or attack.

“That’s where the biggest battle will be.”

Long-serving outside centre Jones, who made his debut as a Reading University student back in December, 2017, is set for a 93rd cap and Seb beamed: “Ellis has been great.

“He didn’t have the start to the season he’d have wanted, but he had a solid game (against Cambridge University) in midweek and he’s put a lot into the side in recent years with what he brings.

“He’s an absolute leader in midfield, a fantastic player who took over from Stevie Bryant and it’s great to have him back.”

‘Bicknell and Jackson deserve debuts’

Further changes come on the bench with a 4-1 split seeing Mikey Duda restored to the squad and debuts for 19-year-olds Harry Bicknell and Paddy Jackson.

Commenting on the latter duo, Seb said: “They thoroughly deserve it. Harry’s a product of us looking at developing players via loans and de did a fantastic job back at Windsor in their promotion year.

“He then captained Berkshire Under 20s to a quarter-final and stepping up from Level Six to Four at Oxford Harlequins, he’s done well again.

“He missed out on the professional Academy pathway, but he’s found an alternative route, been amazing in the past 18 months and deserves his opportunity at Level Three.

“Paddy turned up in pre-season as this beanpole and we wondered what he was all about, but he’s just got better and better and better.

“At Cambridge he grew again, calling the line-out for the first time and he did a fantastic job teaming up with Harry.”

‘Team need to go and enjoy it’

And with 21-year-old Duda also back in the fold, Seb revealed: “You couldn’t deny Mikey after his performance on Wednesday, and it showed what you can do by playing well in midweek.

“He was probably a bit unlucky to miss out after Bishop’s Stortford, but he’s such a warrior and deserves to be back in the squad.

“Trusting youth is something we’ve always done as a club – we’ve got to get the youngsters in and find out if they can do the business.

“There’s no pressure on them because they’ve earned their spots, and now they’ve just got to go out and enjoy it.”

Prop George Breese and Royal Air Force scrum-half also return to the bench to complete the matchday 20.
