MATCH REPORT: SECOND-HALF HEARTBREAK AS RAMS EDGED OUT AT SEDGLEY

Rich Ashton8 Mar - 17:14

Tigers overturn 21-point deficit to stun visitors!

RAMS suffered a second-half collapse as they twice blew a 21-point lead to lose 34-33 at Sedgley Park.

A tepid opening quarter sprung into life as the visitors hit the front with a beautiful try, the outstanding Axel Kalling-Smith – for the second week running not deserving of being on the losing side – making an initial break before an inside ball from Tomek Pozniak sent the Swedish captain under the posts.

Fraser Honey added the extras before Rams immediately extended their lead, another Kalling-Smith charge leading to Zach Clow crossing on the right.

A superb Honey conversion made it 14-0, and with Rams right back to their best, yet another barrelling run from Kalling-Smith set-up Dan Swain to pick-and-dive over the line.

Honey again slotted the kick, but Tigers gave themselves a lifeline on the stroke of half-time as Lewis Bradley finished off a short line-out rolling maul.

Warren Seals’ kick made it a 14-point game at the interval, but the visitors flew out of the second-half traps by winning the restart, the ball spread wide for that man Kalling-Smith to provide another assist for full-back Andrew Lamb to glide over.

Honey made it four from four and 28-7, only for the hosts to swiftly reply as scrum-half Matt Sturgess ended a flowing move on the right.

A set-piece penalty on halfway then enabled the hosts to kick to the corner, a second rolling maul this time dotted down by Ben Gregory as Seals further reduced the arrears.

Rams responded but turned down the chance for a five-metre scrum, the line-out then lost before Park headed to the other end, won a penalty and Seals made it 28-22.

Worse was to follow as the home side scored straight from the restart, Connor Scanlon over on the left to make it a one-point game.

The counter-attacking Tigers then hit the front as they made it 27 unanswered points, replacement Austin Downham over on the left before Seals slotted another kick.

Rams refused to give up, however, and had a chance to steal victory right at the death.

With a penalty advantage five metres out, Honey’s cross-field kick was collected by substitute Oli Rhoads for his second Rams’ try in three games, but the subsequent conversion attempt from out wide drifted left of the uprights as Park celebrated back-to-back wins.

Rams travel to Blackheath next Saturday (3pm).
