WALES DEBUT FOR JOHNNY WILLIAMS

WALES DEBUT FOR JOHNNY WILLIAMS

Rich Ashton19 Nov 2020 - 13:45

Ex-Rams star to grab first cap against Georgia

FORMER Rams junior Johnny Williams has been handed his full international debut for Wales against Georgia on Saturday.

Starting at inside centre, it completes a remarkable 18 months for the 24-year-old former Forest School student, who scored a try for England against the Barbarians at Twickenham in an uncapped game last summer, before then overcoming testicular cancer.

Johnny was a Mini and junior at Rams before he went onto play for London Irish, making his Premiership debut as a teenager and proving to be one of the few bright lights in Exiles’ relegation at the end of the 2015/16 campaign.

He was then part of the England Under 20s team which beat Ireland in the final of the 2016 World Rugby Championship, going on to enjoy promotion back to the Premiership with Irish.

However, after they were relegated for a second time, Johnny switched to Newcastle Falcons, where despite their bottom-placed finish, he impressed enough to earn a call-up by England coach Eddie Jones for the non-cap test against Barbarians, crossing the whitewash in a 51-43 success.

Yet Johnny then experienced a setback as he was diagnosed with testicular cancer, undertaking chemotherapy ending last October before returning to action in January earlier this year.

Despite Falcons securing a place back in the Premiership, he switched to Scarlets in August and with his father Gareth being from Rhyl in North Wales, national coach Wayne Pivac picked Johnny in the wider squad for Wales’ friendly with France and their final Six Nations game against Scotland, along with the four matches in the ongoing Autumn Cup.

And Johnny has now got the nod to partner Nick Tompkins in midfield, the Saracens man currently on loan at Pro14 outfit Dragons.

James Botham – the grandson of famous cricketer Sir Ian – is also included for the first time along with scrum-half Kieran Hardy, as Wales try and end a six-match losing streak.

In announcing the team, Pivac said: “It’s a great honour for the new caps and the players making their first starts, they have trained well and deserve this opportunity to represent their country.

"We see it as very exciting. We look at what they’re doing in training.

"It’s been a matter of when we’d give these guys the opportunity. They’ve run together for two weeks and there’s been combinations."

He continued: “Saturday is a huge opportunity for the players and for us as a squad looking ahead to the future and to RWC 2023.

“As we have said all along, the Autumn Nations Cup is a great platform for us to give opportunities to players, to build depth and experience.”

From all at the #Ramily, we wish Johnny the very best of luck come Saturday!

*Wales v Georgia takes place at Parc y Scarlets (5.15pm). It will be televised on S4C and Amazon Prime.
