Successful campaign ends with hard-fought wins at Newbury!

RAMS Under 14s ended a successful season on a high with a brace of victories at Newbury, the hosts’ two sides also showing plenty of class of their own.

Buoyed by a couple of wins on their Worthing tour, Rams Reds took on the home side in what proved to be an absolute epic.

An incredibly tight first 10 minutes ended with the visitors taking the lead as a rapid turnover freed wing Sam Rodger to race away for a score, James Lunn then going the length-of-the-field to cross in the right-hand corner for 12-0.

However, Newbury hit back to cut the deficit to seven points at the interval, and they then hit the front with a brace of quick-fire five-pointers at the start of the second half.

Trailing 15-12, it fell to Jake Bruton to nudge Rams back ahead with a super score, only for Blues to nudge over a penalty for a one-point lead with two minutes remaining.

It was Rams, though, who had the final say, prop Charlie Neal charging down the wing before offloading to Elliott Compton on the blindside for an incredible finish in the corner to complete a memorable 22-18 success.

At the same time, a consummate team-led performance from Rams Blues helped them overcome an early score from Newbury Whites to take a 34-5 victory.

After falling behind, Henry Mundy put in an indefatigable shift during the breakdowns to win several rucks, and a resulting turnover allowed Ethan Tatum to break through and place a great off-load into Freddie Simmonds to take the try to bring the score even at the break, Josh Nunes also crossing the whitewash.

The second half saw the appearance of super sub Izak Lawale, who’s evasive manoeuvring to switch on the afterburners saw him accelerate away for his maiden club try and the lead.

Front row forwards Micheal Cotton, Joe Boardman and Nunes repeatedly made strong carries, and their efforts drew in Newbury to allow scrum half Max Pulleyn and full back James Argent to exploit the gaps for a try apiece.

The latter also executed several critical tackles to thwart tenacious Newbury attacks throughout the entire half, before Mundy profited from kicking a loose ball to charge down the final try to the delight of a side who had produced a magnificent group effort.
