Former Mini takes on Ireland in Six Nations opener!

FORMER Mini Lucy Simpson starts for England Under 18s in their Six Nations Festival opener against Ireland tomorrow (noon).

Having made her international debut at last year’s tournament at Wellington College, Lucy – who was in the crowd as Rams beat Blackheath on Saturday – now heads to Colwyn Bay, in Wales, as her side aim to go one better than the runners-up spot they secured in 2023.

Described by CEO Gary Reynolds as ‘one of the best youngsters the youth section has ever produced’, Lucy is now affiliated with Hartpury College/Gloucester-Hartpury, having previously been part of Wasps, and takes the hooker jersey as England look to repeat their warm-up 29-14 victory against the same opponents earlier this month.

She will also be on the bench for the second game, against Italy (1pm), with both matches lasting 35 minutes.

England then play Wales (2pm) and Scotland (4pm) with the same format on Tuesday, before facing the only team to defeat them last year, France, on Saturday, April 6 (noon).

The last match is a 70-minute contest.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, England head coach James Cooper said: “We’re intending to go out and seize the opportunity and make the positive start necessary in this competition. Every player available will have some minutes under their belt by Friday afternoon and the group are raring to go.

“Our players gave a positive account of themselves last time out against Ireland, but we as a squad appreciate the stakes will be much higher this time around and will have two very testing opponents to open up our week in Colwyn Bay.

“Five fixtures over a week will test any side, and we anticipate the appropriate response from our team in embracing the challenge ahead and kick-starting the Festival in the best manner possible.”
