Despite the Bristolians being relegated, the 21-year-old caught the eye during his maiden campaign at National One.
And having experienced the Old Bath Road atmosphere, he is relishing his new opportunity.
He explained: “It was disappointing we went down, but I want to push on with my rugby and play at the highest level I can.
“There was a great crowd down when I played at Rams albeit I came off after about two minutes!
“They’re a top set of supporters. I can’t wait to be part of it.
“I’m very good mates with Aaron Tull and he said a lot of good stuff about the club. Things progressed and I’m delighted to be here.”
An all-round sporting talent
The multi-sportsman is also a keen cricketer who has played for Gloucestershire 2nd XI and Bedminster in the West of England Premier Division.
He played age group for both Somerset and Gloucesterhire.
And having played tag rugby at Headley Park primary school and full contact at Broadplain RFC from Under 11, a sport scholarship to Clifton College saw his game progress.
He continued: “I was actually mainly there for cricket, but on my first day they said you’re a second row, and then I’ve kind of been there ever since.”
Bristol Bears come calling
Shay progressed to the Bristol Bears Development programme and talking about his style of play, he said: “I see myself as a powerful ball-carrier, but also like to get my hands on the ball and try and be skilful.
“I’ve liked to be a presence in the line-out for the past few years and can’t wait to get going.”
The 6ft 4in forward has also represented Barbarians against Durham University two years ago, a week after helping Clifton win National Two West.
He added: “It was an unbelievable experience. There were Newcastle players like Micky Young and Will Welch, and it was just amazing.”
‘I can’t wait to be part of the Ramily’
Shay, who is completing a degree in sports coaching from Open University, also works at his Alma Mater.
And he ended by explaining his goals for the season. He said: “Personally I want to try and nail down a spot among some other very good second rows, but as a team, the target is promotion.
“I want to perform consistently, contribute across the board and help the team to get where we want to.
“Off the pitch, I want to be involved, make new friends and become part of the Ramily.”
