R.I.P JOHN BEARDMORE

IT is with sadness I write to advise of the passing of former Club Captain John Beardmore.

He was a very accomplished sportsman who played tennis at a high level and was also a member of Reading GC and Sonning GC.

John played No. 8 for Redingensians and was always able to read the game so as to be in the right place at the right time – he always managed to finish the game as clean as he started!

He was first-team Captain for two years from 1980, and was responsible for dropping our current grass expert, Rod Vaughan, in favour of a young hooker called Andy Lynch! Rod has never forgotten the phone call.

Monday night training at Emmbrook School always commenced with a game of basketball, and while most of us played the same way as we did rugby, John was running rings around us and potting the ball from all over the court.

He spent his working life in insurance and was well-known in Reading business circles during his time with General Accident.

The family are holding a celebration of John’s life at Sonning GC on Monday (August 11) at 12.30 and would be pleased to see his friends from the rugby club.

Please let Rod Vaughan know if you plan to attend via email at Rodericvaughan @btinternet.com
