Recent Form: Perfect. Having enjoyed an excellent 2021/22 campaign, Cambridge have started the season with a full haul of 25 points.
Most recently they put in a statement performance with a 32-19 home success against last year’s runners-up, Sale, while the week before, they held off a brave Darlington Mowden Park comeback to win 32-31 at the Northern Arena.
Their biggest victory to date came in a 39-14 home triumph against Taunton Titans in Week Three, while they came from behind to win a thrilling derby 36-30 at Bishop’s Stortford seven days before.
Cambridge opened the season with a 34-28 win against visitors Plymouth Albion and lost just four of their last 25 fixtures last term – at champions Caldy, Rosslyn Park, Rams on the final day and a shock home reverse against Leeds Tykes.
Players to Watch:
Willie Priestley – The hooker moved from Blackheath to Cambridge at the start of 2019/20 and has gone on to pick up 41 caps, having previously represented Leicester Lions and Coventry in the National Leagues.
Was understudy to the prolific Ben Brownlie last season, but has come to the fore with five tries in as many games this season with his teammate injured.
Brownlie, who scored 27 times including four hat-tricks last season, returned to action last week, and either player will look to capitalise on their side’s renowned rolling maul.
Steffan James – The Welshman pulled off the perfect job interview when landing seven kicks from seven in leading RAMS to a 45-7 win against the Blood & Sand in the final game of last season, and the fly-half has proved a revelation in the opening weeks at Volac Park.
Grabbed a try on debut against Plymouth Albion and sits third in the list of top league point-scorers to date with a tally of 44 also including 12 conversions and five penalties.
Rian Hamilton – Cambridge have terrific options in the back three, with the likes of Joe Tarrant, Joe Green, Kwaku Asiedu and Dan Brough also in contention for a starting slot, but Hamilton has made a supreme start to life at Granchester Road with four tries in his three games to date.
The speedster joined the Blood & Sand on the back of a stunning campaign with Wharfedale in National Two North – he touched down 22 times in 24 appearances – and has also played for Yorkshire Carnegie and Darlington Mowden Park.
