ON THIS DAY - NOVEMBER 23

Rich Ashton23 Nov 2020 - 08:20

Canterbury win (2019), Weston-super-Mare thriller (2013), beaten at Bournemouth (1991), mixed results against Reading and much more!

On this day in history in…

1929 – A Pountney try was not enough for Old Redingensians as they went down 6-3 at home to Berkshire Wanderers.

1935 – A stunning Vernon hat-trick and further tries from AJ Nicker and Emerson sealed a 17-5 triumph at Reading University, the other points coming from a solitary Vernon conversion.

1957 – ORs went down 11-9 at Reading University, despite three Waters penalties.

1963 – Gensians met Old Emanuel at Sonning and lost 8-0.

The opposition were stronger and fitter and deserved their victory.

However, an experimental back division showed some dogged determination to keep the score down.

The closest to points for the hosts was a Tom Bucknell penalty which was disallowed because of an ORs forward being in front of the ball.

1968 – Redingensians maintained their good form with a 6-6 draw away to Old Hamptonians.

Play was dictated by a strong wind blowing down the pitch.

OHs took a 6-0 lead, but Tom Bucknell pegged them back with a try and penalty.

1974 – Gensians were beaten 17-13 in their derby at Reading.

1980 – Bulmershe College held Redingensians to a pointless first half in the first round of the Berkshire Cup.

However, they went down 26-0 with the visitors getting on top thanks to a heavier and technically superior pack.

Lester Hinds ran in two tries and Eveleyn Daniels, Rod Vaughan and John Beardmore one apiece.

Chris Vaal was on target with three conversions.

1985 – Redingensians edged out visitors Reading in a dour derby clash at Old Bath Road.

The deadlock was broken in the 64th minute with a Graham Tibbett penalty.

Then, in injury time, the home side made sure through a try from No. 8 Stuart Loudwell.
He gathered a loose ball on the Reading 22 and sprinted over.

The men in green had put their opposition under intense pressure until they lost both centres, Gary Williams and Keith Floyd, with injuries.

1986 – A Martin Radford penalty was Gensians’ only consolation in a heavy 36-3 reverse against Reading.

1991 – A James Warren try converted by Ball was all Rams had to show for their efforts in a 34-6 loss at Bournemouth.

2013 – A penalty try and further five-pointers from James Baker, Andy Amor and Nigel Gumbleton – added to by a conversion and penalty from James Brooks – earned Gensians a 25-21 home win against Weston-super-Mare.
