Wasps loanee and local boy has impressed in pre-season

SCRUM-HALF Ollie Monye is relishing his first experience of adult rugby following an extended wait.

The former Oratory School youngster – on loan from Wasps – has shown flashes of brilliance with tries in the adapted rules contest against Chinnor back in May, and our only one of the afternoon in Saturday’s 24-7 reverse at Cinderford.

With skipper Robbie Stapley stating Ollie also enjoyed a ‘stormer’ in the 19-12 pre-season home win against Henley Hawks – in which he set-up our first try for Vince Everitt – it has been a bright start to Ollie’s time at Old Bath Road.

And after 18 months of frustration, he explained: “It’s been great to get my first experience of adult rugby.

“Coming out of school it was a tough year with no rugby due to the Covid pandemic, so it’s now really good to have the opportunity to play a bit and get some game time.

“They’re great lads here and because I’m a local boy I actually knew a few of them from before – it’s been great to get involved.”

Looking back at the Cinderford loss, in which his try came with the kind of searing pace which may become his trademark, Ollie continued: “I thought the boys fought well, it was always going to be tricky to come down here and try and get a win, but I think we stuck to it especially in the second half.”

And with the National One campaign set to begin with Saturday’s trip to Cambridge, Ollie has said he will continue to work as hard as possible to help the team.

He concluded: “I’m going to take every week as it comes and try and get enough game time to show what I can do.”
