Cambridge, Sale, Park, Stortford, Chinnor and Taunton triumph!

CHAMPIONS-ELECT Cambridge overcame their penultimate hurdle with ease as they enjoyed a five-try 31-10 triumph at Plymouth Albion.

Currently sitting in third place, a bonus-point win for the Blood & Sand at home to mid-table Birmingham Moseley on Saturday will ensure they are playing Championship rugby next season.

Ben Brownlie’s opening try, followed up by Joe Green, gave Cambridge a 14-0 as former Ram Steffan James added a brace of conversions, only for Morgan Stone to cut the gap.

Cambridge, however, took the game by the scruff of the neck with an injury-time score from Anthony Maka at the end of the first period, followed by touchdowns via Kieran Frost and Kwaku Asiedu at the start of the second, and with James landing two more conversions, it was 31-5.

Albion salvaged a late consolation through Tom Davies, but Richie Williams’ men were never truly pressured as they set-up a shot for glory at Volac Park.

Sale were made to work hard to secure a third-placed finish but ultimately eased to a 49-18 home win against Birmingham Moseley.

The visitors took an early lead as Ryan Roach went over, only for Sale to hit back as hooker Josh Brown collected his 21st try of the season.

Tom Curtis added the extras before a Dan Lewis penalty and Freddie Painter score put Birmingham 13-7 up.

However, the hosts rallied and James Robins touched down for a converted try to give them a slender half-time advantage.

Curtis added the extras after Tumy Onasanya and Jake Barron secured the bonus-point, but Moseley kept going and reduced the gap to 28-18 as Jacob Cusick touched down.

However, Sale ended with a flourish with a trio of converted scores in the final 10 minutes, Stone Priestley-Nangle, Ollie Longmore and Tom Walsh the try-scorers.

Rams’ 33-19 success at Esher allowed Taunton Titans to ensure survival with a hefty 59-28 home victory against relegated Leeds Tykes.

The Somerset side raced into a 21-0 lead inside 15 minutes as Ratu Vakalutukali, Jordan Venter and Noah Fenton all touched down, Iwan Jenkins on target with all three conversions.

Charlie Venables added the extras to a Jacob Mounsey score for Leeds, but Titans grabbed the bonus-point when Ewan Richards crossed.

Alex Spurdle was next to go over for Taunton, and with Jenkins keeping up his fine form with the boot, it was 35-7.

A converted Harry Jukes effort before the bench cut the gap, but Taunton reasserted themselves as Jordan Petherbridge added two points to a Harry Strong try.

Leeds kept battling – Venables again on target after John Okafor touched down – but Ben Oliphant-Thompson’s try kept them at bay.

A Tykes penalty try reduced the deficit to 47-28, but Taunton finished well as Petherbridge converted Charlie Wright’s try before Isaac Dalton put the cherry on top of the proverbial cake.

Rosslyn Park wrapped up fourth spot with an eventful 11-try success at Cinderford.

Seb Strang converted Jake Buckingham’s early effort to put Park in front, only for the Foresters to level as Mikey Austin added the extras to a Danny Hodge try.

The visitors went back in front as Strang knocked over the kick after Arthur Ellis crossed, but Cinderford replied with a converted Shaun Knight try.

Buckingham’s second gave Park the half-time lead, but Austin converted his own try for 21-19 early in the second period.

Mason Tonks extended the advantage before Austin Hay and Max Trimble dotted down for Park, two more Strang conversions making it 33-26 to the Londoners.

A second Knight score gave Cinderford hope, but Charlie Piper’s late effort sealed the deal for Rosslyn Park.

Bishop’s Stortford ended with a best-ever sixth-placed finish as they triumphed 44-17 at winless Hull.

Two Chris Bolton tries and one from Charlie Parkhouse added to by Matt Riddington gave the Hertfordshire outfit a 17-0 half-time lead, Jake Morris then scoring a sensational seven-minute hat-trick to effectively put the game to bed.

A Will Rogers try made it 37-0 before Jack Edwards went over to get Hull on the board, Alex Todd touching down shortly after.

Dan Cole added the extras to a Connor Lloyd try for 44-10, but Hull grabbed a late consolation with Reece Dean converting Mike Adlard’s score.

Chinnor’s fabulous run of form ended with an 11th victory in 15 matches, the Thame men overcoming Darlington Mowden Park 38-29.

Tom Price converted Luke Carter and Nick Smith tries to give Chinnor an early lead, Yaree Fantini replying for DMP.

Price, though, was again on target after Reece Marshall and the fly-half himself touched down, Chinnor leading 28-5 at the break.

Fantini’s second cut the gap, but Price converted Willie Ryan’s try for 35-10.

Darlington responded through Ollie Walker, Ali Ledingham converting, and kept up the pressure as two Callum Mackenzie tries followed.

Ledingham added the extras to the second to make it a one-score game, only for a Price penalty with two minutes to play ensuring victory for Nick Easter’s men.
