NATIONAL ONE ROUND-UP - WEEK 23

Rich Ashton26 Mar - 16:30

Richmond close on title as Rosslyn, Club, Sale, Stortford and Mose also win!

FREE-SCORING Richmond moved within touching distance of the National One title thanks to a 50-26 success at Sedgley Park.

The win – coupled with Rotherham Titans’ 30-19 defeat at Rams – leaves the Londoners 10 points clear at the top with three games remaining.

And they started in rapid fashion, Sam Dardis and Alex Schwarz touching down inside seven minutes as Callum Grieve converted the first.

Ollie Glasse added to Rhys Henderson’s effort before Grieve crossed, Sedgley repeating their earlier trick to cut the gap.

However, Schwarz then doubled up before the break, Grieve making it a 10-point game at the interval.

Another converted try by Grieve was countered by Henderson’s hat-trick and the boot of Glasse, but ‘Mond then pulled clear as Jake Monson and Alex O’Meara went over, another conversion making it 43-21.

Adam Mallinson secured a try bonus for the hosts, but it was the champions elect who had the final word as Greg Kitson dotted down, Lewis Dennett’s extras posting the half-century.

Rosslyn Park recorded a ninth win in 10 games with an excellent 30-24 triumph at Plymouth Albion.

The Devonians built up an early lead as Tom Putt landed a penalty before converting a Rhys Williams try, Park levelling as Ali Wade and Ewan Fenley crossed the whitewash.

A Jenson Boughton seven-pointer nudged Plymouth in front before the break, but Fenley’s second and tries from Benji Marfo and Max Trimble, the latter added to by Josh Bragman, had Rosslyn 27-17 to the good.

A converted Shea Cornish effort gave the hosts hope, but Bragman’s late penalty sealed the deal.

Blackheath climbed to fifth in the standings with a 43-26 win at Dings Crusaders.

Jake Hennessey converted a Jake Lloyd try to put Club in front, their opponents equalising through Tomas Gwilliam and Jamie Elswood.

Converted tries from Blackheath’s Jacob Burns and Dings’ Sol Taufa kept the sides level, but the visitors led at the break thanks to a Findlay Gilmour effort.

Further scores from Billy Harding and Markus Burcham, converted, pushed the Londoners further clear, but Dings kept fighting and hit back through Harry Rowson, George Boulton with the extras.

Harding’s second made it 36-21 before Tom Foot touched down for Dings, but Club had the final say as Auguy Slowik landed following Matt Armstrong’s try.

A last-gasp Jordan Tebbatt score helped Leicester Lions snatch two crucial bonus-points in their 37-31 home defeat to Sale FC.

A James Robins penalty put the Dogs in front, but second-bottom Lions replied with a Harry Palmer try and five points from the boot of Luke Bouchier.

Two converted Osian Roberts tries had Sale ahead at half-time, further five-pointers from Josh Brown, Alfie Longstaff and Ewan Mintern leaving it 32-10.

Bouchier was on target after Jamel Hamilton and Ben Almond touched down, only for Longstaff to double up.

But with a minute remaining, Tebbatt got over to leave his side three adrift of Esher in the survival race.

The Eees went down 52-28 at Bishop’s Stortford despite taking the lead through Johnny Keh, Sam Morley with the kick.

Stortford levelled via Alex Rayment and Chris Bolton, Esher back in front after Morley added to his own try.

However, Rayment’s converted second left it 14-14, Stortford then clear at the break after Bolton was on target from an Alex Gilham effort and Rayment’s hat-trick.

Ben Robbins and Morley reduced the arrears to five, but Tom Mills converted two quick-fire scores from Jack Biard and Declan Murphy.

Keh’s second sealed the try bonus for the visitors, Morley maintaining his perfect record, but it was the home side who closed things out thanks to maul tries from Will Rogers and James Isaacs, Mills landing with the final play.

Birmingham Moseley cruised to a 69-14 home success against relegated Darlington Mowden Park.

Moseley started strongly as Ollie Allsopp, Freddie Painter, Santiago Edwards and Aquile Smith all touched down, Tommy Taylor with a trio of kicks for 26-0.

Mowden got off the mark when Garry Law converted Harry Preston’s try, only for Morgan Adderley-Jones, Smith and Allsopp to all cross before the break, Taylor with two more kicks.

Darlington got the first points of the second period thanks to Will Groves and Law, but Moseley stretched their legs with Painter, Ethan Priest, Will Safe and hat-trick man Smith all over, Jack Jolly with two comversions.
