New boys beaten in front of incredible Cornish crowd
Newly-promoted Camborne put up a gallant home show in losing 50-28 to Cornish Pirates in front of a bumper crowd of 2,389.
The visitors took the lead as Arwel Robson added to an Arthur Relton try, only for Camborne to level through wing Harry Larkins and the boot of ex-Ram Fraser Honey.
But Pirates led 19-7 at the interval thanks to tries from Jack Forsythe and Milo Hallam, plus a second Robson conversion.
Relton doubled up before Dan Hiscocks and Angus Mawson crossed the whitewash to give Pirates breathing room.
Camborne refused to battle, however, and Honey added to a Jamie Prisk score.
But Alessandro Heaney and Sam Cahill helped the visitors to their half century, Robson taking his conversion tally to four before Mawson landed.
It was the home team who had the final word, however, Ewan Murray and Oliver Doherty going over for tries added to by Rory O’Kane.
Blood & Sand complete double
Cambridge recorded a brace of victories, defeating Hertford 21-0 and Colchester 38-12.
Their try-scorers in the opening affair were Jake McCay, Will Wood and Josh Carr, Benji Ritson with three conversions.
The Blood & Sand then took the lead against Colchester with an Eli Caven try.
Their opponents equalised before Jasper Sorrell crossed for Cambridge, Luke Bouchier on target for 12-5.
Colchester levelled again, but a Caven seven-pointer had Cambridge up at the break.
And his side pulled clear in the second period, Jake Parkinson, Jude White and Joe Hill crossing as Bouchier knocked over another two kicks.
Dings Crusaders were edged out 35-33 by visitors Cinderford in a high-scoring affair.
Joe Winfield converted a Sam Smith score to put the away side in front, but Dings rallied to lead 19-7.
Yet Cindy reduced the arrears with a Jake Bailey seven-pointer before half-time, then hitting the front as Winfield landed following a Brendan Llewellyn score.
A Grady Alford effort and Winfield’s boot made it 28-19, only for two Dings converted tries to have the hosts five points up.
But Jack Hall levelled before Alford’s kick proved the match-winner.
Plymouth Albion drew 33-33 at Swansea, the two sides also level 14-14 at the break, while Bishop’s Stortford toppled Merthyr 27-19 under the Friday Night Lights.
Birmingham Moseley won 54-21 at Luctonians, while National Two East champions Bury St Edmunds were edged out 38-36 by last season’s runners-up Oundle.
Tonbridge Juddians – who thrashed Tunbridge Wells 63-7 the week before – cruised past Canterbury 52-7 in their Kent derby.
The games between Leeds Tykes and Hull Ionians, and Sale FC versus Macclesfield, were both cancelled due to the hard ground.
Sheffield begin their pre-season at Sedgley Park on Saturday, while London Scottish travel to Rosslyn Park.
