MATCH REPORT: SUBLIME TITANS PUT SAXONS TO SWORD

Rich Ashton21 Sep 2022 - 16:15

Nine-try hosts prove too strong for Richmond!

RAMS Titans continued their brilliant start to the HALBRO Raging Bull Shield Division One season with a 57-7 home victory against Richmond Saxons (3rd XV).

The hosts grabbed the first of their nine tries when prop Terrel Harry caught the ball at the back of a line-out, and from five metres out he powered through two would-be defenders before Rowan Grundy added the extras.

Titans were looking particularly strong up front, and their second score again came from close range as Mike Hoyt touched down at the back of a five-metre scrum which pushed the Saxons back behind their own line.

While Grundy was unsuccessful from the tee, he made amends by slotting his next opportunity after Harry peeled off the back of a maul for his second of the afternoon.

The bonus-point was secured before the interval and it was again the forwards who led the way, a powerful rolling maul seeing Spencer Hayhow stopped just short of the line before scrum-half Joe Booth finished the job.

Fly-half Grundy added the extras, and Titans grabbed a fifth when Scott Harman showed terrific pace and footballing skills to hack the ball forward a couple of times before picking it up and crossing the whitewash.

Trailing 31-0 at half-time, it was Richmond who collected the first try of the second period, an interception leading to a converted try under the posts.

Yet Titans reaffirmed their control, and they went over again when Miki Vancura touched down on the left wing following a terrific pass off the floor from Stevie Bryant, Joe Booth with a fine touchline conversion.

Ryan Lomas then thought he had scored following two charge-downs in the Saxons’ line, only for the score to be disallowed for off-side, but the Titans pack got to work again and Hayhow powered off another surging maul for 43-7.

It was the backs who had the final say for the home side, firstly Bryant touching down following a trademark Kieran Leicester gliding break from full back – Grundy back on kicking duties to bring the half century up.

And the pick of the tries was the final one, Bryant this time the provider with a sublime flick behind his back from which Leicester cut a glorious line to sweep in to the right of the posts, Grundy making no mistake with the conversion.
