MATCH REPORT: RAMS WIN YET ANOTHER THRILLER AT CHINNOR

MATCH REPORT: RAMS WIN YET ANOTHER THRILLER AT CHINNOR

Students snatch nerve-jangling victory with last-minute penalty!

A LAST-MINUTE Cameron George penalty helped RAMS Under 23s snatch a dramatic 18-17 derby win at Chinnor last night.

Returning students from both clubs produced another cracking clash between the two rivals at Kingsey Road, with RAMS having the better of the early stages.

However, it took until just before the half-hour mark for the deadlock to be broken as flanker Jedd Paine crossed from close range.

George made no mistake to nudge his side 7-0 up, but Chinnor rallied and had the better of the closing section of the opening period.

The hosts were unable to score despite spending plenty of time in the RAMS’ 22, but they did level matters early in the second period.

And it was a self-inflicted wound for the away side, a defensive five-metre scrum ending with the ball dropped behind their line allowing Chinnor to dive on it for the score.

Will Vaughan added the extras to level the contest, but RAMS replied strongly and got themselves back in front shortly after as Alex Phillips peeled off a strong rolling maul before diving over on the left.

On this occasion George was unable to bisect the uprights, his kick drifting to the right, and Chinnor then began to turn the screw as the visitors’ discipline started to wane.

A succession of penalties went in favour of the home side, but it was again two RAMS’ mistakes – a dropped ball when attacking in midfield followed by another when a kick was nudged ahead – which allowed Chinnor another soft try courtesy of Dan Metcalf.

Vaughan’s conversion made it 14-12, but there was plenty of drama yet to come as the lead would change hands a further three times in the final five minutes.

Firstly, Chinnor were penalised at the breakdown and the visitors elected to take a straight-forward shot at goal, George making no mistake.

Then, however, RAMS committed a similar error – much to the delight of a good contingent of home supporters – and they were given further gusto as Vaughan landed the close-range kick from some 10 metres left of the uprights.

But there was still time for one more shift, Chinnor now caught off-side some 35 metres out in front of the posts.

George’s kick always had the length, but it was touch-and-go until the final moment whether it would strike the inside or out of the right post.

The fact it hit the latter made it 18-17 to RAMS, and after they won another penalty at the restart, the away side kicked to touch, claimed the line-out and captain Josh Ede booted the ball into the clubhouse to finalise a stunning late turnaround.
