Wilkinson scores five against brave Reading Abbey

RAMS Centaurs continued their perfect start to the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Division One season with a 106-0 victory against a Reading Abbey 2nd XV who never gave up at Old Bath Road.

The home side made a dream start as within minutes of kick-off, prop Rob Jones broke the Abbey line and found Roan Noone in support, the flanker off loading to Roy Wilkinson for the opening score.

Skipper Jack Gaylor added the extras before the Mighty Cents immediately went further in front, Dave Few fielding the kick-off and making ground before slick work from Sam Boyland, Matt Rose and Alex Griffiths ended with the latter collecting Boyland’s kick to dot down.

Gaylor’s conversion made it 14-0, and a third seven-pointer followed when a powerful charge from George Green allowed James Dias to then set-up Wilkinson to cross out wide.

Centaurs wrapped up the try bonus-point as Wilkinson completed his hat-trick following good work from Boyland and Griffiths, and it was then the forwards’ turn to take control with Jones and Harry Etwell making good ground before No. 8 Chris Kessell cut a smart line to score.

Gaylor maintained his perfect record from the tee and was again on target after Fergus Mackenzie and Rose set-up Boyland to show his pace to score.

Perfectly-timed passes from Noone and Mackenzie created space for Wilkinson to cross for his fourth – Gaylor finally unable to convert – before Rose found wing Sam Rennell with a pass for the speedster to go from inside his own 22 to grab his side’s eighth try of the afternoon. Gaylor’s conversion made it 54-0 at the interval.

Wilkinson continued his prolific form with a fifth after the break, before Gaylor added the extras to a try from the deserving Green.

Three more tries followed swiftly as Jacob Orwell – switching to scrum-half – darted over, Dias sprinted in out wide and Boyland, now also on the outside of the backs, crossed for his second.

Two more Gaylor conversions had his side 85-0 up and with 20 points to his name, and he continued a productive afternoon by slotting kicks following second scores from Kessell and Rennell.

The century was brought up shortly after as Few went over next to the posts, and Gaylor’s 13th successful conversion was the last action of the game.

Mighty Cents manager Marcus Noye was delighted with his side’s performance, but was also glowing in his praise of the opposition.

He said: “So many things went right on the day for us – calm heads, great defensive chat and some skilful passages of play made it a day to remember.

“Player of the match was a difficult pick as Roy stood out with five scores, but Dave Few put in a massive effort. He carried and tackled strongly from start to finish and deserved the accolade.

“But credit is due to the Abbey players. Their heads didn’t drop once, there was no niggle throughout the whole game and they were a credit to their club.”

The Mighty Cents travel to third-placed Amersham & Chiltern 2nd XV this Saturday.
