MATCH REACTION: ‘DELIGHTED TO PERFORM FOR HOME CROWD!’

TWO-TRY wings Axel Kalling-Smith and Zach Clow were delighted to make amends during the 27-7 National One home success against Bishop’s Stortford.

Axel scored the first two of the afternoon, before a Ruaridh Williams seven-pointer reduced the deficit before the break.

But fit-again Zach’s quickfire double during the final quarter secured the bonus-point.

It took him to 52 Rams tries in 78 games, Axel up to 48 in 99 for a combined century.

Captain Willo Bicknell grabbed a late score to add a further gloss to the final tally.

And it was an important win following the sub-par loss at Birmingham Moseley seven days before.

Sweden’s record try-scorer Axel admitted: “We had a bit of a change in the week regarding mentality, some experience coming back with the likes of Willo (Bicknell), Zach and we knew back at home, we had to change things from Birmingham.

“We did that and our skills were better. We’re delighted to perform in front of the home crowd.”

‘We had some nice flow in the backline’

Zach, who missed the previous three games following an ankle injury at Dings Crusaders, also joined Axel on four for the season versus BSE.

He paid tribute to his teammates, saying: “We had 10 (Ross McKay) and 15 (Darren Atkins) slinging it around and then it’s down to me and Axel to do our job.

“We had some flow in the backline and I was so happy to be in front of the fans.

“We’ve been asking the crowd to get behind us and in the last quarter they really did.

“It means a lot to us, we’re so thankful and long may it continue.”

And with Axel set to become Rams’ latest appearance centurion at high-flying and unbeaten Tonbridge Juddians this week, he too was swift to praise others.

He ended: “I’m privileged to play 99 caps and it’s been a joy ever since I’ve joined.

“I’ve had such great lads around me helping facilitate me running over the line on the wing.”
