DIRECTOR of Rugby Seb Reynolds is buzzing for tomorrow’s National One opener at home to Darlington Mowden Park (3pm).
The show gets on the road again as Rams get set for a fifth season at Level Three, having previously recorded a trio of runners-up finishes along with a sixth place in 2021/22.
Mowden Park are long-standing members of National One and enjoyed an improved campaign last term, highlighted by a thrilling 41-36 success at Old Bath Road.
Looking ahead to the return to league action, Seb began: “We’re looking forward to it – the players have worked incredibly hard during pre-season, and I’m sure DMP have as well.
“The first game is always enjoyable because there’s not much chance to review the opposition and over-obsess about what they can do, although we know what DMP like to do.
“They’re a very dangerous side and myself and Danny (Batty, defence coach) enjoy the way they play.
“They try to keep the ball alive, have a good off-loading game, and they’re a real challenge for any team. It will be a hard one.”
Rams hand starting debuts to second row Nile Dacres and wing Tomek Pozniak, the latter a try-scorer in the pre-season friendly at Chinnor, while Tom Vooght returns from two years at Henley Hawks to make his 157th appearance for his boyhood club.
Fellow signing Morgan MacRae is also in line for a first cap from the bench, while the remainder of the squad were all in tow last year.
And Seb continued: “There’s a good spine to the side with plenty of experience. The captaincy has been handed over to Max, but Robbie has worked incredibly hard to get into the No. 8 shirt.
“We’re excited to see this bunch play because they truly embraced the pre-season period, they’ve come together well, and it will be interesting to see how they go.”
Tomorrow’s game will be the first at OBR since the narrow win against Richmond on April 13, and Seb cannot wait to see the Ramily back on the sidelines.
He ended: “There were a few questions about why we didn’t have a home pre-season game, but we only had two and it was the way they fell.
“However, I feel it’s bred some excitement that our first game is on our own patch, and we can’t wait to get out in front of our supporters.
“We want to get Old Bath Road rocking and have a good afternoon.”
