DoR looking for defensive improvement as he hails ex-Ram Moff!

SEB Reynolds admitted Rams must improve their defensive efforts ahead of tomorrow’s National One trip to Bishop’s Stortford.

Following the sensational 33-0 home success against Sale in Week Three, the Berkshire boys have extended their winning streak to five matches despite shipping 65 points in victories against Dings Crusaders (44-36) and Leicester Lions (54-29).

A trip to old rivals Stortford – the National One side Rams have played more than any others over the years – sees the visitors currently edging the head-to-head 7-5, but Seb confessed they his side need to up their game to extend the advantage.

He said: “(Defensively) we need to improve – it’s important not to overthink it because we have to respect the opposition we faced – but there’s elements we’re always working on and it’s no surprise if you ship that many points, we’re looking to put it right.

“We’ve had great contests with Stortford over the years, whether it’s been in National Two, where they won the championship, or in National One.

“They’re a fantastic team who’ve played some brilliant rugby over the years and they played really well against Sedgley Park last week.

“They were physical through the middle, their defence looked sound and against Plymouth a fortnight ago, they were right in the contest against a very strong side.

“We’ve been going to Stortford for many years, and we like what they’re about, but we’re under no illusions about what we face.”

Rams are also set to combat a familiar face in the form of hooker Ollie Moffitt, the Reading University graduate who went onto rack up five tries in 56 first-team appearances before moving to Bishop’s.

Seb was quick to praise the front row as he continued: “Moff’s a fantastic guy. He came through the University and it speaks to the strength of the partnership we’ve had that so many players come through – the likes of Ellis Jones, Rowan Grundy, Ryan Lomas recently, going back a few years Louis Woolf and currently Liam Elston.

“They’ve performed amazingly for the side and Moff was one of those. He’s also a great character, fantastic player and it’ll be great to see him.”

With plenty of travelling support expected at Silver Leys, Seb also thanked those who made last Saturday’s centenary game such a success as he ended: “It was a brilliant occasion and for everyone who came along for the first time, I think they saw a good match with the sun shining.

“The support was amazing and the players love it, I know Leicester also loved the atmosphere and that’s what the guys deserve – it’s not just us, it’s everyone in this fantastic league.

“People go all round the country and to have these atmospheres is great – long may it continue.”
