SEB Reynolds admitted in-form Blackheath are a side possessing ‘real quality’ as the fourth-placed Londoners arrive at Old Bath Road tomorrow (3pm).
Club made a series of eye-catching signings in the off-season and despite being edged out at home by Richmond and the notorious strongholds of Birmingham Moseley and Plymouth Albion, James Shanahan’s side have won six of their nine games to date – including their past three.
With former Ram Mikey Etete – 6ft 7in and 120kg – joined by ex-Jersey Red Tom Everard (6’6, 118kg) in the second row, 26-cap Fijian international Tex Cavabuti (6’7, 120kg) ready to come off the bench and plenty of other physical specimens in the pack, Blackheath also have an abundance of threats among the three-quarters and Seb admitted they look a complete team.
He said: “They’re an example of what makes rugby so special – you’ve got to have some chunky lads, some big ones, some fast – and they don’t come much bigger than Mikey!
“It’ll be lovely to welcome him back – he’s a great guy who had a good time here and it’ll be nice to see him.
“Shanners is a top guy who coaches a very strong side and he’s done a great job with Blackheath.
“They’ve always been a strong team, but they look real quality at the moment, and they’ve clearly improved from the start of the season.
“We’ve never had an easy game against them, and we look forward to hosting them for an eagerly anticipated encounter.”
Rams make two changes to the side which overcame a poor start to beat Sedgley Park 40-22 last time out, Ant Marris returning at loose-head prop in place of Ioan Emanuel and Solodrau Radianirova at outside centre for Axel Kalling-Smith.
Seb continued: “Ant’s been playing very well and it’s great to have the options with the props.
“Ioan didn’t do anything wrong to not have his place, but to bring someone of the calibre of Ant back in – and what he’s done for the side – is wonderful.
“He’s had one of his best pre-seasons in his many years at the club and I’m sure he’ll go well.
“Solo’s a quality player whose been very good around the group – you can he’s feeling more comfortable and the lads love him to bits. Hopefully he can be on top form at the weekend.”
With a large crowd anticipated for tomorrow’s tussle, Seb urged the Ramily to get behind his side under the special atmosphere the turning of the clocks back brought in the second half against Sedgley.
He ended: “One of the best things about the season is the change in conditions – early on you get the sun, but now the nights are closing in you get the cold evenings and the atmosphere truly grows.
“We’ve got a great side coming here for what should be a fantastic game and hopefully all the supporters will enjoy it and once again get behind our lads.”
