LUCY HELPS MOVE ENGLAND ONE STEP FROM GRAND SLAM

LUCY HELPS MOVE ENGLAND ONE STEP FROM GRAND SLAM

Rich Ashton12 Apr 2023 - 11:30

Perfect start has side four wins from four ahead of France showdown!

LUCY Simpson is on the cusp of a maiden Grand Slam with England having won their opening four games at the Under 18 Six Nations festival at Wellington College.

Each game is played as one 35-minute half, and former Rams Mini Lucy was on the bench for the opening 10-0 win against Wales, Connie Clarke and Daisy Aspinall with the tries, before hooker Lucy made her bow in the 21-0 triumph against Scotland.

Ella Cromack converted her own try to open the scoring before Lauren Bailey finished a fabulous team move for their second.

Cromack was again on target before Natalee Evans was set-up by Bailey for a third converted try and a perfect start to the competition for England.

Lucy – who was conspicuous all round the park against the Scots – was back among the substitutes as the hosts made it three wins from three yesterday with a 14-5 triumph against Ireland yesterday.

Clarke crossed on the right to give England the lead after a slick team move, Cromack with a fine conversion, before Amelia Williams powered over from close range for another seven-pointer.

And while England’s defence was eventually breached by Lily Morris in injury-time, it proved to be the final act.

Lucy, who progressed through the Rams' set-up and onto Wasps then Hartpury College/Gloucester, returned to the starting line-up as England maintained their perfect record with a 15-7 win against Italy.

With the rain sweeping in, Clarke and Aspinall both hoovered up grubber kicks from fly-half Millie Hyatt to make it 10-0, before Italian hooker Chiara Cheli’s try was added to by Mannini.

However, it was Clarke who had the final say, another fumbled ball in the back kicked forward for the wing to double her tally and set up a Grand Slam showdown with the other unbeaten side, France, on Saturday (4.30pm).
