TEENAGE ace George Makepeace-Cubitt is set for his England Under 20s Six Nations debut at home to Wales on Friday night (7.15pm).
The in-form full-back, who grabbed his first Rams’ tries during the most recent game against Taunton Titans, is included on the bench for the game at Bath’s Recreation Ground.
Having rejoined his boyhood club from London Irish in the summer, George is the only National One-based player in the 23-man squad, with all others bar Racing 92 second row Junior Kpoku – previously with Saracens and Exeter Chiefs Academies before his move across the English Channel back in November – attached to Premiership sides.
Newcastle Falcons and Northampton Saints lead the way with four each, while Gloucester, Sale Sharks, Exeter Chiefs, Saracens and Bath have two players and Harlequins, Bristol Bears and Leicester Tigers one.
It is believed the last non-Premiership player picked for England U20s was Bedford Blues’ wing Josh Bassett more than a decade ago, although there are plenty in the squad who have National One experience this term.
Prop Asher Opoku-Fordjour (Sale), centre Ollie Spencer (Darlington Mowden Park) and wing Toby Cousins (Leicester Lions) all helped their respective loan clubs defeat Rams during the three-match losing streak midway through the first half of the campaign, while Rory Taylor (Chinnor) and Craig Wright (Leicester) have also featured at Level Three.
Friday’s game will be shown live on BBC IPlayer.
*Best of luck George from the Ramily!
