Over the past two seasons the Cents have managed to blow it when playing away to Aylesbury in games that were less than appealing to the eye. Once again this could hardly be described as a classic game of rugby, but at least the Mighty Cents keep rumbling with an away win. It is fair to say, however, that this was a much improved Aylesbury side when compared to the last two seasons.
Playing on the new AGP surface was always going to be testing in a really strong crosswind. Whilst played in great spirit by both sides, both teams struggled to string meaningful phases together. Knock ons at the crucial moment and turnover ball in open play almost became the norm. In the first half the Aylesbury scrum had the upper hand, but this was reversed in the second half.
There were three cracking tries however from the Cents, which brightened the afternoon. The first was from wingman Casey, but set up well by "the Vicar" Blythe. Receiving the ball in open play Blythe set off to jink in and out of the cover defence from outside the opposition 22. He worked his way to the left flank where he offloaded well to tee up Casey, who blasted over to score out wide. Unconverted.
Aylesbury grabbed a penalty before Flynn scored a brilliant solo try. Again he latched on to a loose ball in open play, just inside the opposition half before setting off on his journey to the try line. He seemed to take on and beat most of the opposition before touching down under the posts in a try that Jason Robinson would have been proud of! Converted by Leicester.
Aylesbury grabbed another penalty before their forwards trundled over from close range to score what soon became a converted try. This gave them the lead for the first time in the match 13 - 12. With time running out in the half Leicester bagged a penalty to make it 13 - 15 at half time.
As the wind gathered in intensity the rugby sadly dipped in intensity. Cents declined a couple of easy chances for points from very kickable penalties (when will we learn?) before Leicester was finally asked to slot one to make it 13 - 18. The remainder of the half was pretty disjointed. There was one ray of light when Cents scored their final try of the afternoon which was end to end stuff. Full back Flynn set off from his own 22 before offloading to Leicester who took things up to the half way line before a nicely timed pass released J Dias on the wing. He lit the after burners to outstrip the cover defence in fine style, running round to touch down under the posts. Leicester added the extras.
Many thanks to Aylesbury for their hospitality (great nosh!), and to the ref who did a good job in tricky conditions. Thanks to flag dude Geoff, once again, also big thanks to the travelling support, very much appreciated.
Well done to man of the match Leicester.
