Redingensians Rams 12 Cambridge 33
George Drury’s ninth minute try gave Rams hope of a shock result against National 2 South leaders Cambridge.
But it was not to be as the table-toppers ended the hosts’ seven match winning streak with a five-try assault to enhance their title chances.
Rams skipper Dan Barnes said: “I felt the final result failed to reflect the effort we put in. But in the end perhaps we were careless and made too many mistakes.”
His side started brightly and a series of pick and drives gave lively scrum-half Drury the chance to nip over from short range.
Then Cambridge came back into the game and levelled when Rams defence ran out of cover on the half hour.
George Bretag-Norris went over in the corner for the visitors’ man-of-the-match Gerhard Boshoff to add the first of his four conversions.
Five minutes before the break, leading try scorer Albert Portsmouth crossed to give the visitors a lead they just about deserved.
Almost immediately Rams suffered the loss of big second row Dieter Kerschbaumer with a head injury.
They held out bravely in the first quarter-of-an-hour of the second half as the Cambridge pack got on top and laid siege to the home line.
Then the home side were handed a big blow with a yellow card for lock Tom Bryson. Not surprisingly soon after Cambridge replacement No 8 Stephen Hipwell increased the visitors’ lead.
However 14-man Rams hit back when No 8 Robbie Stapley put the finishing touches to a catch and drive for his sixth touchdown in five games to move his side into bonus point territory.
Cambridge, a good all round side, finished by far the stronger and made sure of five vital points with late tries from Michael Ayrton and Jarrod Taylor.
In the final minutes, flanker Dan Wood make his first team debut as replacement to move the number of Rams players used this season closer to the 50-mark.
