FLY-HALF Alex Seers admitted it was ‘great to be back’ as he inspired Rams to a 38-21 opening-day victory at home to Esher on Saturday.
A number of injuries meant the last time Alex had started in National One was the final game before the Coronavirus pandemic, way back in March, 2020.
But he had impressed during the victories against Lansdowne and London Welsh in pre-season, and translated those displays into a vital 18-point contribution against the National Two South champions.
Successfully converting scores from Axel Kalling-Smith, Henry Bird, Charlie Robson, Max Hayman and himself, Alex also landed a penalty just as Esher had closed the deficit to 35-21 on the back of two quick-fire tries.
And the stand-off revealed: “It was great to be back after a really long two-and-a-half years, and I really enjoyed it – although I was blowing after about 30 minutes!
“But it was great to have the jersey back on, and while I don’t want to curse things, it was pleasing the kicks at goal were coming off the boot so nicely.”
Rams were particularly impressive in the opening half as they built up a 28-7 lead and had the bonus-point secured, with Alex continuing: “We’ve worked hard during pre-season and when we can get on the front foot and play with tempo, it gives us the chance to play with freedom and the way we want to.
“It was really pleasing we were able to do that at times against Esher.
“It’s nice to get five points on the opening day, but as we said in the huddle, there’s a lot to learn.
“But there were lots of positives and we can build on this ahead of what is going to be a really big test at Chinnor.”
Among the try-scorers were Axel and Charlie, and Alex was delighted with their performances, adding: “It’s been great to see some of the new guys come into the team – I thought Dan Swain was class – and they’ve really worked during pre-season so deserved the chance.
“Hopefully we can build some partnerships during the season.”
