20 QUESTIONS WITH...NIGEL SUTCLIFFE

'The Oracle' has been involved with the club since 1955!

Year joined: 1955. I had just left school and played my first match for the A team at Eastleigh.

In the second game we lost 34-3 to Berkshire Wanderers and I felt completely out of my depth!

Role: Former player, press officer, archivist/researcher.

Best rugby memory: There are so many, but Rams winning promotion at Clifton as National Two South champions.

Worst rugby memory: I was playing full back, I think for Abbey 2nds, and I inexplicably mistook the try line for the 22-metre line, so instead of tackling their player as I could have done, I just stood there are he touched down by the touchline.

Favourite food: Italian.

Favourite drink: Malt Whiskey.

Favourite travel destination: South of France.

Favourite Rams try: Any Rams’ pushover one.

Favourite ever try: A disallowed one for Bourgoin against London Irish in 1996 – a wonderful try full of slick passing and interplay. It was typical French rugby and even though it didn’t count, it lives long in the memory.

Favourite ever player(s): Jonny Wilkinson.

Favourite current player: Marcus Smith.

Other hobbies: Any sport.

Favourite TV show: So many old ones to pick from (today’s mostly rubbish!), but Last of the Summer Wine.

Favourite musician: Nat King Cole – great voice, song writer and jazz pianist.

Favourite song: Mr Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra.

Favourite rugby ground(s): Old Bath Road obviously.

Second team: My background is Yorkshire, so Huddersfield Giants.

Favourite other sports: Cricket, golf, horse racing especially.

One rule change you'd make in rugby: A balance needs to be struck with tackling the upper body – too many red cards for tackles deemed dangerous.

Best thing about Rams RFC: The ambition.
