Year joined: 1978/9 (not sure if mini records exist!)
Role: Making players a little better each training session as a coach, former first XV captain, Life Member.
Earliest RAMS’ memories: Joining my first training session with the late Graham Frost and making new mates who became lifelong friends.
Running into Barry Jackson (BJ) my coach a few years later and busting my lip open which needed six stitches.
Best rugby memory: Spending the day with Jonah Lomu and his family as part of the RWC2015 Trophy Tour, equally taking the Colts to the National Cup final unbeaten in all league and cup fixtures.
Worst rugby memory: Giving the beer kitty to Julian Lidstone and Andy Lynch while in Cork for Kinsale 7s – they disappeared for the rest of the afternoon to enjoy fine cigars and port.
More painfully, retiring early from playing due to injury.
Funniest RAMS’ memory: So many which involved being naked and very drunk – we didn’t have to worry about social media back then...
Hoisting the pants on the tour coach to Cork (you will have to ask Spike).
Favourite tour memories: Plenty, but Benidorm 7s. We were watching the International Final, which was being filmed live for Spanish TV, and there was a streaker as the presentations were being made.
As I was already shirtless (and a little tipsy), I ran on to the pitch stripped and took the streaker out with a big tackle - he was very confused. At the time, I didn’t know it had been caught on camera until the game was aired on TV at the end-of-tournament celebration.
Separate to that, Craig (Bambi) being locked naked in a small metre sq. cage and carried to the halfway line at half time - then being interviewed through the cage by the local TV channel. Very random, but very funny.
Later on, Timmy Bell going around and talking to the local dignitaries and other important tournament organisers and unknowingly to them, placing a slice of tomato on their shoulders before he walked off.
Favourite travel destination: Canada – I have dual citizenship (born in Wokingham, UK). Plus any of the original 7s tours to Kinsale, Benidorm, Amsterdam, Marbella or Dubai.
Favourite RAMS’ try: The one which takes us up to Championship Rugby.
Rams players who inspired you growing up: Ian McIntyre (Mackie) Shane Tawera and Timmy Bell.
Favourite ever player(s): Neil Back, Jonah Lomu, Michael Jones.
From RAMS, Spike Chandler, Andy Amor, Rob Hancock (6’2”, eyes of blue, Robbie Hancock is going to get you…) and Tom Vooght.
Favourite current player(s): Jak Rossiter and Ollie Cole.
Best sporting achievement: I ran the London Marathon in 1996.
Other hobbies: Charity work, public speaking around mental health, photography .
Favourite song: Teenage Kicks by The Undertones.
More current and reflective of my journey over the last 10 years then ‘The Sound of Silence’ by Disturbed.
One aspect of the game which has changed for the better since playing: Fly-halves tackle rather than leaving it for the open-side flanker.
Unsung heroes: The memories and quality of images taken in all weather conditions, across all sectors and teams by Paul Clark and Tim Pitfield, with a special mention to the late Gareth Jones, are outstanding.
I don’t think we (players/parents) all appreciate how lucky we are to have the likes of Paul and Tim giving their time with a professional approach.
Also, my old mate Rob Dyer, who spends hours behind the scenes doing so much - especially washing the kit!
One rule change you'd make in rugby: The game has become very structured, and with that can be quite boring and uninspiring depending on the game plan / coach.
I would welcome more organised chaos and jeopardy by removing the time allowance especially to box-kick from the base of the ruck, this can be as easy as the call ‘ruck’ means no one else can enter the ruck, therefore stopping the whole stacking to move the ball further away from contact area to give more ability to put in a ‘worthy’ box-kick.
This would mean playing the ball away from contact and increasing the exciting chaos rugby is starting to completely move away from.
As the IRB are trying to be very disciplinary on ball out of play, maybe add time on for the time the ball is above head height (I would love to see a stat on that with England).
If the game is becoming slowly more like American Football with the ball becoming more out of play and the referees being more deliberate in managing time on/off to prolong the game to allow the ball to be more in play across the 80 mins, then to make this easier across all levels of the game, just extend the match time to 90 minutes.
I am sure the VETS might have something to say about this but it feels like a more common-sense approach of what is being trialled by the IRB to make it more easily adapted to all levels of the adult game.
Best thing about Rams RFC: Rams is easier to say than Redingensians.
One final thing for the last 20 questions of 2022: This holiday season is more important than ever to stay connected with family, friends and #RAMILY.
Wishing everyone hope and happiness this Christmas.
