The Bristol-born loose-head, who can also play on the other side of the front row, has impressed for the students in both BUCS Super Rugby and the Welsh Premiership during the past couple of years.
And as he finishes a Masters in Sports Coaching, he now has his sights on making an impact at Old Bath Road.
Explaining the move he said: “The club showed an interest in me and with their aspirations it was an easy decision.
“Everyone’s been unbelievably welcoming and it’s a great place to be.
“The playing style, the heads-up rugby, it’s something I’m extremely excited to be a part of.
“I’m keen to play as much as possible and just keep getting better.”
‘I pride myself around the contact area’
With the club having a rich history at prop, including record-breaker James Baker and centurion Ant Marris retained for next season, JJ continued: “Speaking to (Director of Rugby) Seb (Reynolds) he mentioned the competition at prop.
“I already knew about James and Ant, guys who’ve been at the club for a long time.
“They’re obviously unbelievable at what they do and hopefully I can pick up lots of pointers from them.
“They’ve also adapted because modern-day props are expected to do more than just push in a scrum, and they’re making line breaks.
“While I like to think I’m pretty good at the set-piece, I also like to get my hands on the ball, carry it a lot and I pride myself especially around the contact area.
“I think that fits with Rams.”
‘Football wasn’t really for me!’
A late arrival to rugby, a 11-year-old JJ first picked up a ball at St Bernadette’s RFC after the sport caught his eye on a dog walk.
But he made swift progress while attending Beechen Cliff School, picked up by the Bath Academy the following year.
And he joked: “I didn’t know rugby, but I quickly realised it’s probably the only sport I’m any good at!
“I’ve always been quite big and while I played football as a goalkeeper or full back, it wasn’t really for me.
“My co-ordination is more suited to rugby.”
Now 6ft 1in and 125kg, the 22-year-old is relishing the chance to be involved and meet the Ramily.
He said: “From what I can tell, Rams have built a great culture with the support.
“To get a chance to run out in front of them would mean a lot, and I’m looking forward to a new beginning in Berkshire.”
