AUSTIN’S ARMY SUBDUE RAF

PETE Austin led British Army to a 38-20 victory in their Inter-Services Championship game against Royal Air Force.

The hooker came up against fellow Ram Sam Boxhall at Gloucester’s Kingsholm Stadium, and it was the Red Shirts who came out on top.

The RAF took the lead with a Mark Williams penalty, but Army moved in front as Jack Johnson converted a Tomasi Vula score.

Craig Irwin barged over to nudge the Light Blues back in front, but it was swiftly 26-8 to Army  thanks to seven-pointers from Sean Beevor and Koroinivuku Vereti, Penaia Tagutu then touching down.

The Air Force but the gap to 11 at half-time thanks to Freddie Richardson’s converted try.

And the fightback continued as Zack Taylor’s effort made it 26-20.

But Army regrouped as Tagutu doubled up, Mikey McDonald with the extras.

A 25-minute stalemate ended with Matt Dawson grabbing the Red Shirts’ sixth try, ensuring a second-placed finish with Royal Navy the unbeaten champions.
