MATCH REPORT: UNDER 23s COMPLETE FESTIVE CLEAN SWEEP

LOUIS Roumignac bagged a brace as Rams Under 23s completed an encouraging festive programme with a 35-19 victory at Cambridge 1923s.

With the treacherous weather leaving Granchester Road unplayable, the game was moved to the 4G pitch at the University, and the two sides played out an even opening quarter.

But it was the ‘home’ side who took the lead through Brad McKenna, then repelling some pressure before pulling further clear.

And it was a wonderful team score which started with an interception on their own five-metre line, the Blood and Sand then going coast-to-coast before McKenna finished his second and Will Howes added the extras.

Rams hit back in style

Rams got back into the contest as Roumignac sniped under the posts before Theo Pett-Ridge converted.

The visitors then hit the front for the first time just before the break, second row Ollie McGlennon powering over from close range with a pick-and-go superbly slotted from the touchline.

The Berkshire outfit quickly pulled further clear after the interval, Colts’ captain of the past two years Aaron Preston with a powerful run to dot down by the posts for a seven-pointer.

Rams’ forwards were proving highly efficient and they gave themselves breathing space with another close-range score, McGlennon’s partner in the engine room, Will Burroughs, this time the beneficiary.

With the perfect record from the tee continued it was now 28-12, and the away side put the game to bed with a brilliant individual second from Roumignac, the conversion again on target.

And while strong and well-organised Cambridge kept going, Calum Hirst’s late score proved merely a consolation.

Victory for Rams completed a fruitful three weeks following victories against fellow Championship sides Chinnor and Richmond, with 35 players representing the new-look team.
